Toronto’s prolific producer and multimedia artist ZONES (aka Derek McKeon) has been finely crafting his tapewarped psych jams since his debut in 2012. After six years full of touring and bubbling in experimental underground music scenes, ZONES follows up the 2016 LP with his third studio effort, “The State of Light”.

“The State of Light” presents a dense 45minute sonic trip where ZONES manages to cut through the rainbow fog he has been known for, to deliver the most highly focused and hifi sounding record to date. Fusing tropes from 70s/80s era funk and disco with his signature tape warbled wahwah psych, pushes the LP into a fresh landscape wholly of its own. Seven tracks of neon lit, zoomed out and abstracted boogie grooves shifting in and out of focus, while the hypnotizing and repetitive pop hooks wiggle their way into your subconscious.

The album opens with the slomo electric boogie of “ELEVATION” and acts as the perfect introduction to the new ZONES world. Mid tempo loose and chunky drum machines with a wormy gfunk bassline holds it down, while pitch bending midi flute solos ride on top of analog synthesizer goop. Tracks like “WINECOP” and “THE SYZYGY” sound like they could be a rare Herbie Hancock bside played at the wrong speed and coated in an iridescent psychedelic glaze. Each song radiates with the distinctive ZONES sound and an overall sonic environment amidst the deep and trippy undulating rhythms. This is the ZONES band at their funkiest and the outcome is the most groove heavy ZONES record to date.

“The State of Light” released world-wide October 5th, 2018.

“All of the stars align on “The Syzygy,” the latest otherworldly video from the twisted mind of Vinyl Williams — it’s the melted crayon melodies of Derek McKeon, whose new ZONES album, The State of Light, peaks with the psychedelic track” – SELF-TITLED

“In other words, it’s a thick perceptionwarping aural marmalade that absorbs its listener in a similar way to the output of the more exotic practitioners of the hypnagogic pop scene and the type of stuff LA’s Not Not Fun label began pipetting onto the tongue of the world in the mid00s.” – THE QUIETUS

“ZONES have mastered the rich textures of melting melodies and afternoon horseshoes after summer class with your stoned friends.” – TINY MIX TAPES
